A SPONSORED dog walk in aid of the RSPCA is set to return to Coventry’s War Memorial Park next month following the success of last year’s event.

Animal lovers will gather at the city’s popular park on Sunday (September 25) for ‘Paws in the Park’.

All funds raised on the day will go directly to the RSPCA Coventry, Nuneaton and District Branch – which relies entirely on community funding as the centre does not receive support from the government nor the main RSPCA head office.

Various stalls featuring fundraising games and activities will be on show to help raise vital funds for the centre which relies entirely on public donations.

Donna McCarthy, volunteer fundraiser at RSPCA Coventry and Nuneaton, is hoping the event will help raise awareness about the centre.

She said: “Last year’s event was organised by our head office, however this year we’re doing it all off our own back.

“All of the money raised will go towards the day-to-day care of the animals at the centre.

“Ideally, we want to raise more money than last year – after all we are doing it for animals that have been abandoned, abused or surrendered to us.”

The Coventry branch regularly treats and cares for dogs that would otherwise have been left vulnerable on the city’s streets.

All dogs that arrive at the centre immediately receive a full health check and are vaccinated, microchipped and neutered before being re-homed as Donna explained more about the work the charity does.

She added: “The RSPCA Coventry, Nuneaton and District branch covers a wide area and we are there for the animals owners when they need us.

“The staff are on hand to give out any advice that adopters may require and any after care needed as well.

“While dogs are with us, we try to get them used to the basic obedience training, such as sit and stay commands.

“Anyone can attend the event next month, though if you want to take part you have to register.

“We are looking for volunteers on the day including marshals, stall helpers, maintaining hygiene and people who can help set up and pack away.”
