A ‘WAKE-UP call for the city’ – a Coventry councillor has launched a petition demanding the complete rebuild of an historic building in Earlsdon Street which was demolished without approval.
Coun Gary Ridley, leader of Coventry City Council’s opposition, launched the petition to rebuild the former NatWest building at 34-36 Earlsdon Street after demolition work began without permission.
The council served a temporary stop notice prohibiting more work from taking place, which lasts until late February.
As the area is part of a designated Conservation Area, Coun Ridley has raised concerns about the effectiveness of these safeguards, fearing ‘far wider implications for heritage protection across Coventry’.
His petition calls for the council to fully investigate the circumstances of the demolition, use all available sanctions against those responsible, ensure the building is fully restored, and reassure residents that the protections afforded by the conservation area are fit for purpose.
He said: “I’ve felt compelled to set up this petition because this isn’t just about one building, it’s a wake-up call for the whole city.
“If something like this can happen in a conservation area, what does that say about the protection of historic sites across our city?
“The incident has drawn comparisons to the controversial demolition of The Crooked House pub near Dudley, which was demolished without proper authority after a fire, prompting a national outcry and demands for its rebuilding.
“The city, celebrated for its historical landmarks and architectural significance, risks losing its unique identity unless conservation measures are strengthened and rigorously enforced.
“We must stand together because only firm and decisive action can protect Coventry’s heritage and prevent similar incidents in the future.”
A council spokesperson said: “We can confirm the works at 34-36 Earlsdon High Street did not have planning permission.
“As a result, our Planning Enforcement Team served a Temporary Stop Notice and we will investigate in line with our normal procedures.”
