A COVENTRY support worker won a national award for bringing ‘laughter and compassion’ to a hospital supporting children and young people with their mental health.

Magnus Ezuma is a support worker at Cygnet Joyce Parker Hospital, a child and adolescent mental health services hospital in Coventry.

He has been recognised for his outstanding care and compassion and won the Support Worker of the Year at Cygnet’s annual nursing awards.

The awards took place at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.

Magnus said: “This is a huge surprise. No two days are the same in my job and that is why I love it.

“We see young people come in very poorly and we see them make the most remarkable progress. When they leave and turn round to say thank you, it’s the most amazing feeling.

“Awards like this show that the work you are doing, it is being seen and appreciated. This means a lot to me.”

Nominating Magnus, the team at Cygnet Joyce Parker Hospital said: “Magnus has gone above and beyond in this role, ensuring that all staff have an opportunity to be heard, meeting with staff in the community and ensuring that they feel valued.

“Magnus has brought a laughter and infectious compassion to the hospital. He embodies the values of Cygnet Health Care in all that he does, he is unafraid to speak up for what is right and he empowers people to make positive changes.

“Magnus has demonstrated a high level of care towards all of the young people he supports as well as all staff. He brings fun and laughter to the wards he works on, you often see him dancing around, playing cards with the young people and he is an advocate for positive engagement.”

Karen Johnson, Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer, Behavioral Health at Cygnet’s parent company Universal Health Services, announced the finalists and winners of the awards, for which there were 529 nominations across nine awards categories.
