TEAM Enable rider Layla Bradbrook produced a brilliant ride to defend her title in the Welsh National Mountain Bike Cross Country and Short Track Championships.

Junior rider Bradbrook, racing for Coventry-based Team Enable-MI Racing- Townsend Vehicle Hire, led from the start at Dare Valley Country Park in South Wales.

She finished four minutes ahead of the second-placed rider to claim her fifth National Championship title.

In the elite women’s championship, Layla’s older sister Holly completed five laps of the intense cross country course and claimed silver in her first year competing at elite level.

At the same championships, Team Enable rider Nick Whitley competed in both the short track and cross country races.

Whitley blasted round the 20-minute short-track race to claim silver before then winning silver in the cross country race.

Elsewhere, competing in the Masters British Circuit Racing Championships, held at London’s VeloPark, Rugby-based rider Rob O’Connor just missed out on a gold medal.

Racing in the 65 to 69 age category, O’Connor was just pipped to the line in a two-man sprint missing out on gold by half a bike length as he settled for silver to claim his second national podium of the season.

Nuneaton-based cyclist David Mead became Midlands District time trial champion after winning the Aerocoach 15-mile race held near Tewkesbury.

The veteran rider completed the tough course in 30 minutes 50 seconds – averaging just under 47kph. He finished more than one minute ahead of the second-placed rider.

Also competing in the Championships for Team Enable were Mark Wise who finished first in the veteran 55 to 59 age category and sixth overall, Simon Law who placed second in the same age category and seventh overall and Thomas Bradley who placed 12th overall and finished second in the standard road bike category.

Further afield. Northampton-based rider Andy Oliver earned selection by the Invictus Games Foundation to compete in the European Championships 70.3 Ironman triathlon event in Estonia.

Oliver, who was formerly in the Royal Air Force, will complete the cycling leg as part of an Ironman relay team. He has undergone major leg surgery and rehabilitation over the past few years and has also previously competed in the 2023 Warrior Games in America, winning a gold medal in the cycling time trial and two bronze medals in the swimming pool.
