Aaron Rai has been a well-established professional golfer for around a decade but has seemingly reached the peak of his career this year.
Rai has reached levels in the world rankings that he has never gotten close to before, thanks to his 2024 performances.
He is now firmly situated amongst the world’s leading players and is certainly one of England’s greatest.
Here we will look at the West Midlands star’s exceptional 2024 season to date, as well as how it has allowed him to improve his stature within the sport.
Rai Won for the First Time on the PGA Tour
The highlight of Rai’s season has undoubtedly been his maiden win on the PGA Tour. He won the Wyndham Championship in August by two strokes over Max Greyserman, which arguably represented the standout win of his career.
That win allowed him to prove his credentials when it comes to winning big events, and he has even emerged as an outside option in golf betting for next year’s major championships. His greatest chance of pulling off an extraordinary upset is predicted to come at The Open Championship, where he is offered at 75/1.
It would still be a massive shock if Rai were to take the huge step of winning a major, although it is hugely promising that he is simply considered amongst some of the biggest names and is expected to comfortably make the halfway cut next July.
While Rai’s PGA Tour win garnered the most headlines, he has managed several other impressive finishes in what has been a strong year overall. His greatest major finish was tied-19th in the US Open, which was more than respectable considering he was seen as a minnow ahead of the competition.
He also recorded strong PGA Tour finishes before finally getting over the line with an initial victory. Rai finished tied second in the Rocket Mortgage Classic in June and fourth in the CJ Cup in May – two performances alongside the standouts that have been huge in powering him up the rankings.
The Wolverhampton Golfer Has Reached a Career High 22nd-placed ranking
Rai’s strong efforts in 2024 which have included consistent high-ranked finishes and even a historical victory, have seen him earn a remarkable world ranking position of 22nd place.
The Wolverhampton-born player entered 2024 in 64th position and has remarkably not only broken the top 50 for the first time but threatened the position of some of the outright world leaders.
This has allowed him to leapfrog big British names like Tyrell Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick in the Official World Golf Rankings – which places only Tommy Fleetwood ahead of him when it comes to Englishmen.
Ultimately, Rai’s incredible rise in stature in 2024 – inflicted by the extraordinary determination and ability he has shown on the green – now means that the West Midlands is home to one of the current top golfers on the planet.
The region has been a regular producer of top sporting talent over the years, such as in football and rugby but never has it commonly birthed elite-level golfing stars. If Rai can sustain his current levels throughout 2024 and beyond, then his hometown and the wider region may have a sporting icon on their hands.
