ROB O’Connor claimed yet another victory to end the road racing season in style racing for Team Enable-Townsend Vehicle Hire-MI Racing.
O’Connor secured a third straight victory in the Kenilworth Wheelers BMCR event held at Snitterfield.
In difficult wet and windy conditions, O’Connor showed his class to win a 300-metre uphill sprint to the line after six laps of an eight-mile course.
The time trial season is drawing to a close and Team Enable’s recent signing Michael Wills raced in the Cambridge Cycling Club 25-mile time trial held on a revised F2C/25 course near Cambourne.
Roadworks on the normal course meant last-minute course alterations introduced eight roundabouts. This made for a tough and unpredictable course but the veteran rider produced an excellent time of 58 minutes and 28 seconds to finish in 64th place overall in a field of 150 riders.
Elsewhere, a number of Team Enable riders took part in the Kettering Cycling Club 10-mile open time trial event.
Nuneaton-based David Mead once again clocked the fastest time of the day to finish in 21 mins and 30 secs as he claimed his 14th open event win of the season from 16 entries.
The top-three riders were separated by just nine seconds with Mark Wise seventh overall in 22 mins 58 secs while Zoe Shepherd and Greg Ashley competed in the road bike team event and finished third in 26 mins 9 secs.
Shepherd and Ashley also picked up the most improved team award against their pre-race predicted time.
In the special Rugby Racing Cycling Club ‘Flyer’ event, held on the popular K10/12B time trial course, another of Team Enable’s new signings Luke Allen finished third in a time of 56 mins and 1 sec.
The 25-mile road bike only event, held in celebration of former Rugby Racing member Ralph Dougherty, saw certificates and medals given out to riders who beat the one-hour mark.
Just behind Allen was teammate Oliver Searle in the time of 57 mins and 6 secs with Wise ninth in a time of 1 hour 2 mins 47 secs.
Elsewhere, the cyclo-cross season in now well underway and Nick Whitley took the honours in the veteran 50 to 59 category race held at Baggeridge Park in Halesowen as part of a Team Enable one-two-three.
Whitley finished ahead of Kenilworth’s Darren Atkins and Nick Popham. In the same category, and riding his first race of the season, Alan Buxcey finished in 53rd place despite suffering a mechanical issue halfway around the first lap and having to run to the pits area for a bike change.
And in the 60-plus age category race, Coventry’s Pete Busby finished third with teammate Mark Garrett not far behind in ninth. In the ladies 40 to 49 age category race Lindsey Whitley finished sixth place and in the men’s senior race Thomas Bradley finished 18th while Colin Miller finished fifth in the veteran 40 to 49 race.
Further north, sisters Holly and Layla Bradbrook competed in round three of the North West Cyclo-cross League held at Wythenshawe.
Layla finished fourth overall but took first place in the under-23 category, while older sister Holly finished 12th overall and finished third in the under-23 category. Layla is the current Welsh junior cross country mountain bike champion.
