RUGBY UNION - Coventry Rugby stay top after bonus point win at Cambridge

COVENTRY Rugby remain top of the table following a five-try 36-19 bonus point win at Cambridge.

Tries from Ryan Hutler, Jimmy Martin, Charlie Robson, Josh Barton and Oli Morris ensured Cov maintained their perfect start to the season at Ellgia Fields.

The result means Coventry lead the Championship table by three points and are the only side to have won all three of their opening matches.

Alex Rae’s side made the perfect start when Hutler finished Liam Richman’s perfectly-weighted kick-pass inside the first minute before the latter added the extras.

However, Cambridge responded with a try of their own as Arthur Lennon profited from a break up the pitch although Richman charged down the conversion.

Cov scored their second try on 23 minutes as Martin won a foot race to his own chip ahead after receiving an offload from Robson and Richman kicked the conversion.

And Robson then scored a stunning solo try four minutes after the break as he ran in from 60-metres out, beating several defenders along the way, as Richman converted.

The visitors secured a bonus point on 55 minutes when Barton dotted down after a powerful carry from Tom Ball with Richman again adding the extras.

Cambridge reduced the deficit just past the hour mark as former Cov man Ben Adams touched down and Louis Grimoldby kicked the conversion.

Richman kicked a penalty soon after to stretch Cov’s lead before Morris scored the away side’s final try in the corner on 73 minutes after good work from Martin.

The home side then scored a consolation try three minutes from time as replacement Matty Jones touched down and Grimoldby converted.

Coventry are next in action against Chinnor on Saturday, October 12 with kick-off at 3pm at Butts Park Arena.
