COVENTRY Rugby head coach Alex Rae insists ‘work-in-progress’ full-back Charlie Robson will only become a better player as the season goes on.
Robson scored a stunning solo try on his first start for the club as Cov claimed a bonus point 36-19 win against Cambridge to move three points clear at the top of the Championship table.
And Rae is excited to see how the 22-year-old develops over the course of the season following his arrival at Butts Park Arena in the summer from National One outfit Rams.
Rae said: “Charlie is a work-in-progress who is raw and very exciting. He will make some mistakes but also will score tries like he did today as he has a natural ability to beat people.
“He’s a bit of a ‘pocket rocket’ and the more confidence he gets, the better he will become.”
Cov ran in five tries against Cambridge as Robson, Ryan Hutler, Jimmy Martin, Josh Barton and Oli Morris all touched down at Ellgia Fields.
And Rae felt it was important to freshen up his squad after making seven changes from their win against Bedford in their last outing.
Rae added: “We made a few changes but that had no impact on our performance.
“In a way it’s sometimes quite pleasing to win ugly and overall I’m happy to be leaving with five points.
“We’ve trained really well all week and at this early stage of the season it’s important that we keep everyone fresh and give opportunities to those who look hungry in training.
When we win it’s not down to the 15 or the 23 who are on the pitch as it’s a 35-man effort. People don’t see the effort that goes in during the week from those who aren’t playing but wins are built on a whole-squad contribution not just what happens on the pitch.”
Coventry are next in action against Chinnor on Saturday, October 12 with kick-off at 3pm at Butts Park Arena.
