Serial Coventry shoplifter jailed

A SHOPLIFTER who repeatedly targeted stores in Coventry has been jailed as police crack down on business crime across the city.

At Coventry Magistrates Court, Jason Howard, 39, of no fixed address, admitted nine offences of shop theft around Jubilee Crescent in Radford between November and early January.

Howard was jailed for three months, and a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) means he will also be banned from entering the area around Jubilee Crescent after he has served his sentence.

West Midlands Police’s Radford neighbourhood team and Local Offending Management Unit sought the CBO from the courts to help protect businesses longer-term.

If Howard breaches the order he faces being arrested and spending more time behind bars. The order also requires Howard to see support services following his release to reduce the risk of reoffending.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “We know how frustrating shoplifting is for business owners, and the wider community, and we’ll always look to identify and arrest suspects.

“A CBO gives us greater powers to arrest people known to be responsible for breaching their conditions and causing any associated anti-social behaviour.”
