COVENTRY Sphinx returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 2-1 victory away at AFC Rushden and Diamonds.
Goals either side of half time from and Harry Wakefield and Callum Woodward put Sphinx in command before Aidan Webster reduced the deficit at Hayden Road.
The result means Coventry sit 14th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, 10 points clear of the relegation zone.
Sphinx broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark when Ben Heath kept out substitute Luke Shearer’s initial effort only for Wakefield to turn home the rebound into an empty net.
And the visitors doubled their lead on 78 minutes as Woodward’s floated free-kick from the left evaded everybody in the box and found the net with Heath rooted to the spot.
Rushden halved the deficit eight minutes from time when Webster’s downward header beat Charlie Woods but Sphinx held on to claim a third win from their last four matches.
Coventry are next in action Boldmere St Michaels on Saturday, January 25 with kick-off at 3pm at the Boldmere Community Stadium.
