Shoplifter jailed after spate of thefts in city

A SHOPLIFTER has been jailed after a spree of shop thefts in Coventry.

Andrew Carter, 40, was sentenced to six months in prison, as well as being banned from five shops in the city.

This is after a spree of offending which saw him steal more than £1,000 of goods from the stores.

Carter was convicted following work by the Henley and Longford neighbourhood team, who worked to examine hours of CCTV footage and evidence to build a case against him.

Carter was charged with a total of 21 shop theft offences, as well as going equipped.

In addition to being jailed, Carter was banned from a number of shops in the North East of Coventry – namely Tesco in Clifford Bridge Road, M&S Simply Food in Clifford Bridge Road, Asda in Brade Drive, Co-Op in Woodway Lane, and Home Bargains at Cross Point Retail Park.

These restrictions were added as part of a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) which gives officers increased powers to arrest him if his offending continues.

The CBO against Carter runs for 13 months.

A Coventry Police spokesperson said: “Carter’s conviction is the latest in a series of excellent results our teams on the Coventry Local Policing Area have secured against prolific offenders.

“By using CBOs, we are able to arrest known offenders earlier and take action against them by making it an offence for them to attend areas where they are known to commit crime and anti-social behaviour.”
