ICE HOCKEY - Coventry Blaze show class to beat Steelers and Devils in four-point weekend

COVENTRY Blaze completed a four-point weekend with a dramatic 3-2 overtime win against Sheffield Steelers.

Chase Gresock’s extra period goal helped Blaze to victory on home ice against the Steelers at the Skydome Arena.

That came after Coventry came from two goals down to beat Cardiff Devils 5-3 at the Vindico Arena.

The results mean Blaze sit fifth in the Elite League standings.

On home ice against the Steelers, Coventry made the perfect start when Gresock fired a shot over the shoulder of Matt Greenfield at 4.13 to open the scoring.

However, Sheffield drew level at 15.10 as Joona Huutula finished off a well-worked move.

Blaze reclaimed the lead at 18.48 when Nick Seitz capitalised on a Steelers turnover and produced another finish high into the net to beat Greenfield.

Despite the best efforts of Blaze netminder Mat Robson, Sheffield equalised for a second time at 31.16 as Huutula scored his second of the game.

Following the goal, Robert Dowd and Mike Kennedy dropped the gloves in a heated exchange as the game went to overtime following a goalless third period.

The Steelers hit the post less than a minute into the extra period before Sheffield’s Mikko Juusola was called for a hooking penalty.

And Blaze took advantage of the extra man to win the game at 61.47 as Gresock fired a shot through a screen to the delight of the home crowd.

That came after Blaze scored three goals in the final 10 minutes to earn a come-from-behind win against Cardiff in Wales.

Cardiff made a blistering start and took the lead after just seven seconds as Cole Sanford stunned the visitors with an early goal.

And the Devils doubled their lead at 3.47 as Sanford teed up Zach O’Brien who beat Robson in the Blaze net.

However, Coventry halved the deficit just 54 seconds into the second period as Jackson Cressey tapped in after Brandon Alderson saw his initial shot saved.

A costly turnover allowed the Devils to restore their two-goal cushion at 27.08 when Tyler Busch scored with one second remaining on a Cardiff powerplay.

Blaze responded at 35.25 as Seitz netted his 20th goal of the season to keep the visitors in the contest.

And after coming out of the penalty box, Seitz levelled the game at 52.11 with his second goal of the game.

Coventry piled on the pressure and completed the turnaround with five minutes left to play when David Clements unleashed a venomous shot past Ben Bowns.

Cardiff pulled netminder Bowns in the final minute and Blaze sealed the points at 59.21 as Gresock finished into an empty net.

Coventry are next in action against Nottingham Panthers on Saturday, February 15 with the face-off at 7pm at Motorpoint Arena.

Blaze then host the Panthers on Sunday, February 16 with the face-off at 5.30pm at the Skydome.
