FOOTBALL - Coventry Sphinx held by Wellingborough after injury-time drama

COVENTRY Sphinx conceded an injury-time penalty in a dramatic 2-2 draw away at Wellingborough Town.

Sphinx thought they had won the game in the first minute of added time when Iddriss Fuseini found the net.

However, the home side won a penalty four minutes later which Will Jones converted.

And in a dramatic conclusion to the fixture at the Dog and Duck Ground, the referee overturned another penalty awarded to Wellingborough at the death.

That came after Jones put Wellingborough into the lead just past the hour mark only for Fuseini to equalise soon after.

And the result means Coventry sit 15th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table.

Following a goalless first half, the game burst into life on 64 minutes when Jones finished neatly past on-loan Sphinx goalkeeper Jason Alexander.

However, the visitors drew level seven minutes later as Fuseini forced the ball home via the aid of a deflection after Jack Downes saw his initial effort blocked.

And Sphinx completed the turnaround in injury time when Fuseini smashed a loose ball past Ash Bodycote via the aid of the crossbar.

However, there was still time for Wellingborough to win a penalty at the death after Patrick Zito committed a foul in the box.

And Jones stepped up to double his tally for the game with a confident finish from the penalty spot.

The referee pointed to the penalty spot again in the 97th minute with Zito deemed the culprit again.

However, following a lengthy consultation with his assistant, the referee overturned his original decision as both teams left with a share of the spoils.

Coventry are next in action against Grantham Town on Saturday, February 15 with kick-off at 3pm at the Sphinx Industrial Supplies Arena.
