BOBBY Thomas scored a dramatic 94th minute winner as Coventry City snatched a late 1-0 victory against Queens Park Rangers.

Thomas rose highest to head in Jack Rudoni’s corner from the right to spark wild scenes of celebration at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

And the result means Coventry sit just one point outside of the Championship play-off places.

The Sky Blues somehow failed to break the deadlock early on as Ellis Simms saw his initial header hooked clear before Paul Nardi made a fine save low down to his right to deny Matt Grimes and then superbly kept out Simms’ follow-up from inside the six-yard box.

QPR went close at the other end when a floated corner from the left fell at the feet of Jack Colback who lashed a first time shot wide of the post.

And Oliver Dovin then pushed Paul Smyth’s powerful effort to safety after the QPR winger cut in from the right.

The visitors came forward again after the break as Dovin made an excellent stop low down to his left to keep out Michael Frey’s shot when one-on-one from eight-yards out.

R’s keeper Nardi then made a fine reaction stop after Victor Torp’s initial shot hit Luis Binks and deflected towards goal.

The teams continued to trade chances as Dovin made another save low down to push Ilias Chair’s shot from distance around the post.

City spurned a glorious chance to break the deadlock late on when Tatsuhiro Sakamoto played the returning Ephron Mason-Clark in-behind the R’s defence only for Nardi to smother the ball as the latter tried to take it past him.

However, the Sky Blues snatched the points four minutes into injury time as Thomas headed Rudoni’s corner from the right into an empty net with Nardi caught underneath the cross.

Coventry are next in action against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, February 15 with kick-off at 3pm at Hillsborough.
