FOOTBALL - Frank Lampard wants Coventry City to stay focused ahead of Sheffield Wednesday trip

FRANK Lampard believes Coventry City can improve ‘big parts of their game’ ahead of a trip to Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

Coventry head into the clash three points outside of the play-off places following a late 1-0 win against Queens Park Rangers in midweek.

The Sky Blues beat the Owls on penalties in the FA Cup earlier this season, however, Lampard feels City can improve on that performance at Hillsborough.

Lampard said: “It’s been a challenging period, especially the week of Leeds, Ipswich and QPR and we probably felt that against QPR in the first-half performance particularly, but we’ve come through it well.

“We’ve now got some players that maybe haven’t been starting much or are coming back fit that are adding extra competition to the squad as whole.

“You must feed off that [momentum] because it is a thing and there will be moments when you’re not in that period, so it’s good but it’s also good to keep check and understand that we’re going to a team that are above us in the table this weekend for a reason.

“It’s a clean slate again, remember the good things we’re doing and understand the things that we can improve because looking back at our game against Sheffield Wednesday in the cup, we can improve big parts of our game and it’s up to us to keep going.”

City have won five of their last six league matches but tasted defeat against Wednesday at the Coventry Building Society Arena earlier this campaign.

And while the Sky Blues have climbed up the table in recent weeks, Lampard wants his side to remain focused with the play-off spots in their sights.

Lampard added: “The table is normally a bit of a reality at this point after this many games in a season.

“We’ve managed to move up the table ourselves, but we have to understand that when people get excited about the play-offs the evening of QPR, when you take a breath and look at the table, so are many teams and they are all around us.

“It’s very important that we keep focused and understand the challenges of every game.

“When you look at the fixture list, nothing is easy, and every game has to be fully prepped for and delivered from our point of view.”

Coventry travel to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, February 15 with kick-off at 3pm at Hillsborough.
