A PETITION to improve road safety outside Allesley Hall Primary School has been launched by Coventry North West MP Taiwo Owatemi.
Governors and staff at the school raised concerns of the safety of pupils at drop off and pick up times to Ms Owatemi, who then created the ‘Step Safely with Allesley Hall Primary’ petition.
The petition calls for a zebra crossing on Winsford Avenue from APS Accountants to the school, a vehicle activated sign near the school, and to make the surrounding area 20mph during peak drop off and pick up times.
During the launch, members from the Allesley Hall Primary Student Council held hand made ‘zebra crossing’ posters.
Ms Owatemi said: “I’m pleased to be working with Allesley Hall Primary and Whoberly Councillors on such an important campaign to help improve safety measures around the school.
“Having met with Allesly Hall’s headteacher, it was clear that measures are needed to prevent an accident occurring outside the school.”
Headteacher Duncan Cottrill said: “At Allesley Hall Primary School, the safety of our children is always our top priority.
“Every day, we see the challenges that families face when crossing the road outside our school, and it is essential that we take action before an accident occurs.”
Coun Jayne Innes, Whoberly ward councilor and sponsor of the petition, said, “We’re delighted to join with the school’s staff, parents and children.
“Taiwo is such a hard working MP, and her energy is infectious. It’s wonderful to be working with her on this.”
To see first hand the traffic concerns, Ms Owatemi and Whoberly ward councilors organised a speed gun watch with the local police on Winsford Avenue, and members of Allesley Hall’s student council were invited to be involved in the event and the wider community campaign.
