Boost your skills in guitar and Welsh song at CVFolk workshops
Would you like to discover the talents you never knew you had as musicians and singers? There are two chances coming up to do just that with the help of local experts in Coventry’s Albany Theatre.
Music campaign group CV Folk is staging two of its ‘Folk Freshers’ workshops on Saturday (March 1). The morning event starts 11am and features celebrated local multi-instrumentalist and folk singer Mick Bisiker sharing his skills on flatpick guitar.
And from 2pm, as it’s St David’s day, there’s a rare chance to try singing traditional Welsh songs – in Welsh! Coventry singer, musician and choir leader Andy Jones hosts the session and promises to guide you through any tricky pronunciation.
CV Folk workshops helps people of all ages, and at different levels of experience, to develop skills in various aspects of folk music-making and singing. Taking place in one of the theatre’s recently refurbished studios, the two-hour sessions are proving very popular for boosting performance skills and confidence in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Admission for each workshop is £8 (£5 concessions). Book on 02476 998964, or visit the Box Office on arrival. Further details on these and future workshops are on www.cvfolk.com.
A superb night
Well, the Coventry Music Museum’s new exhibition We’ll Live and Die in These Sky Blue Towns was well and truly opened last week with the arrival of the band that created the song – The Enemy themselves, who also accepted the ‘Number One’ statuette that all chart toppers are now presented with. The trio never got one back in the day for their number one album. Lee Hopkins of Warwick-based chart company Kantar and his team did the honours.
Also in the house was CBS DJ Stuart Court who DJ’d with Myles Cadden from Sky Blue Fans TV on the night. Andy was responsible for helping to make the song more popular at the CBS Arena, and gave us a superb set of local based songs on the night.
Of course there is another very popular Sky Blues song, Go For It – Cov’s anthem of the 1987 FA Cup Final, written by Coventry couple Steve and Heather Taylor who were also there on the night.
Heather explains that the idea of the song came to her in a premonition months before Coventry had got anywhere near the final – very spooky.
Speaking of the cup final, apart from the FA Cup on show, Dave Bennett was also there to sign his superb book.
Plus our very own poet Nick Knibb and his latest masterpiece just for the night.
I thanked Tom and the band and their team for their support and he replied: “ I speak for all of us when I say it was our pleasure, Pete. What you all do at the museum is amazing. Keep it up!”
The exhibition runs until December, so come along and wear your colours. The CMM is open Thursdays to Sundays
