COVENTRY Blaze romped to a commanding win against Sheffield Steelers before holding off a third period fightback to beat Guildford Flames.

Blaze thrashed the Steelers 6-0 at the Utilita Arena to inflict the heaviest home defeat on Sheffield for six years.

And Coventry then beat Guildford 3-2 on home ice at the Skydome Arena to celebrate a four-point weekend.

The results mean Blaze sit fifth in the Elite League standings.

Against the Steelers, Coventry broke the deadlock at 10.38 as Jack Hopkins converted Brandon Alderson’s feed.

And Blaze doubled their lead just 23 seconds into the second period when Mike Regush tipped Chase Gresock’s shot past Matt Greenfield.

The visitors extended their lead at 29.11 as Hopkins scored his second of the game through Greenfield’s legs.

Coventry all but sealed the points at the 35-minute mark when Jackson Cressey batted home a bouncing puck on the powerplay.

Blaze put the game beyond doubt at 44.32 as Mike Kennedy found the net on the rush.

And Nick Seitz completed the scoring at 52.44 with a goal on the powerplay to cap a scintillating performance.

Coventry backed up that result with a hard-fought victory against Guildford on home ice.

Blaze made the perfect start as Alderson opened the scoring just 81 seconds into the contest from close range.

And Alderson struck again at 11.52 when he finished Alessio Luciani’s precise cross-ice pass.

Coventry stretched their lead in the second period at 25.23 as David Clements found the net after good work from Hopkins.

However, the Flames cut the deficit in the third period at 48.50 when Brett Ferguson scored on the powerplay.

And Guildford set up a tense finale as Brett Welychka struck at 51.30 after the visitors pulled their goaltender for an extra skater on a delayed penalty.

Coventry are next in action against Cardiff Devils on Saturday, March 8 with the face-off at 7pm at the Skydome.

Blaze then travel to Fife Flyers on Sunday, March 9 with the face-off at 5.15pm at Fife Ice Arena.
