A DEDICATED woman who followed her dream to become a Nursing Associate by studying at Coventry University while her mum was being treated for cancer has won an award for her ‘unwavering commitment’ to her apprenticeship.
Nicola Peach has received the university’s Endeavour Award – given to students who exhibit exceptional dedication and go above and beyond in their studies – having qualified with flying colours.
Nicola had worked in the NHS for around eight years before deciding to pursue the Nursing Associate programme at the university in 2023.
The next two years of study came at the same time her mum was battling cancer – meaning a fine balancing act between work, study and home life.
Nicola, who works at George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust in Nuneaton, said: “I was truly shocked but proud to receive this award. I have loved every minute of my studies and the team I worked with were brilliant and so supportive.
“I left school 30 years ago so to even get through the first year was an achievement.
“I sent my mum a piece I had written and she asked which article I was referencing, and I explained that I had written it – she couldn’t believe it! She can’t wait to come to my graduation.
“I also want to thank the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) team and the education team at George Eliot Hospital for all of their support throughout my journey. I have been supported by the Trust every step of the way to achieve my goals.”
The 47-year-old’s journey to success began a decade ago when she started a job in a doctor’s surgery before becoming a ward clerk across various departments at George Eliot. It was during her time in the AMU that Nicola found her calling in patient care.
Driven by a desire to do more, she moved into a Healthcare Support Worker role, overcoming challenges with the help of the hospital’s education team. Nicola successfully completed the necessary courses, including her Care Certificate, to qualify for the position.
Karen Heywood, Course Director for Nursing Associates Apprentices at Coventry University, said: “Nicola is receiving this recognition due to her unwavering commitment to her course, her career and her support to others. Despite having some challenging times, Nicola has continued to dedicate herself to her apprenticeship for two years.
“Her attendance at university has been exemplary and her professional approach to her learning is a personal triumph but she has also represented George Eliot Hospital and the values they expect from their employees.
“Nicola was a pleasure to teach and her learning and personal journey is something I am proud to have been part of. As a course team we wish her every success in her future career.”
Katie Wood, Senior Sister on the AMU at George Eliot, said: “We are so proud of Nicola. She is a wonderful colleague who always goes the extra mile for both her colleagues and patients. We are excited to see where her career takes her next.”
