Sensory equipment for autistic people now available at Coventry Central Library

AN INNOVATIVE Sensory Library Project has launched in Coventry.

Coventry Central Library launched the project with a special event featuring Lord Mayor Mal Mutton and Coun Dr Kindy Sandhu.

The free-to-use sensory library features a range of sensory equipment such as noise cancelling headphones, weighted lap pads and various sensory lights.

All items can be borrowed free of charge with a library card. They are particularly aimed at adults with autism, but can be used by anyone.

The project has been set up by Alex Hilton, a city resident with autism, who found autistic sensory processing was not typically well-catered for in society.

Alex said: “I wanted to support people in my community and offer them the chance to try out a range of equipment so they can see what best meets their needs before they make a purchase.

“If I’d had the chance to borrow a pair of noise cancelling headphones for example, I would have realised how much they would help years earlier and been in a better position in my life.”

The community-led venture has been funded by the Heart of England Community Foundation in collaboration with Coventry Resting Spaces, and is supported by regional charity Grapevine’s community organising team.
