COVENTRY City have confirmed the date of the unveiling of a new statue to commemorate FA Cup-winning heroes George Curtis and John Sillett.

The Sky Blues will unveil the statue on Thursday, April 17 at 1pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Coventry host West Bromwich Albion in a league match the following day when the club will also mark the statue unveiling.

The statue will be located in the south east corner of the Arena near to the ticket office, backing on to the singers corner section of the stadium.

Supporters are welcome to attend the unveiling with a number of special guests also likely to make an appearance.

Curtis and Sillett guided Coventry to the club’s only FA Cup victory to date in 1987 after masterminding a 3-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the final.

The pair guided the club to top-flight safety the previous season.

Curtis made 543 appearances for the Sky Blues as a player and captained the club.

He also held a number of behind-the-scenes roles with the Sky Blues following the end of his playing career.

Sillett played 128 games for Coventry and helped the club win promotion to Division Two in 1963/64.

Both Curtis and Sillett later became life presidents of the club.

Curtis passed away in July 2021 at the age of 81 while Sillett died in November 2021 at the age of 85.

Sculptor Douglas Jennings is making the statue. He has also immortalised legendary players Johnny Haynes, George Cohen and Jack Charlton.

A committee formed in 2023 to raise the required funds to complete the statue with the target reached in July 2024.

Former Coventry chairman and chair of the commitee, Joe Elliott MBE said: “We are proud to confirm the unveiling date for the statue of George Curtis and John Sillett.

“Since the fundraising appeal was formally launched in January 2024, following earlier donations from a number of generous individuals and businesses, there has been a groundswell of support for this project.

“To see the statue at the Arena will be a proud day for everyone connected to the club, but most of all for the Curtis and Sillett families, as we recognise and remember the achievements of their loved ones.

“The club that George and John loved is continuing to make strides forward, and the feel around the Arena is more of home than ever.

“We have a proud history and they are two towering figures, and characters, in it. It is brilliant that they will now be such an important part of the Arena for generations to come.

“I am sure the Sky Blue Army will be out in force for this historic occasion.”
