MUSIC MATTERS: 'Finely crafted piece of timeless pop' from Robert James Grey; reflections on the Godiva Festival line-up

This Town by Robert James Grey is a ‘finely crafted piece of timeless pop’.

Robert James Grey – This Town

Coventry based singer-songwriter Robert James Grey – as heard on BBC 6 Music and BBC Introducing – delivers a dynamic, layered performance with this classically inspired piano piece and its lyrical, haunting vocals.

This Town is a finely crafted piece of timeless pop that lifts and sweeps the listener along on a wonderful lilting journey of love and belonging.

It’s vocally beautiful and musically haunting as it tells the tale of finding your spiritual home where it was less than expected.

This is yet another tour de force from the Love and Madness camp that never fails to deliver high class and engaging music of all genres. This is something special going on in our city that music lovers should be aware of.

This is Robert’s 1st release on Love and Madness. He is planning many more in 2025 as he works towards an LP to be released this autumn. This Town dropped on all platforms on March 28.

Godiva 2025

So the line-up for Godiva 2025 is out (see page 5). It has been interesting seeing the reception it has received on social media. I put it under the banner of ‘you can’t please all the people all the time’ – it’s a mixed bag that tends to swing to the positive in fairness.

For me Godiva is a gem of a festival that is something that gains attention for Coventry and its culture, we should embrace it and make sure we never lose it.

So my personal thoughts, and this is just me of course – I’m pretty pleased with this fairly robust offering. Marc Almond and Ocean Colour Scene both know how to deliver on the big stage. Heaven 17 may have borrowed their name from Clockwork Orange, but there’s nothing clockwork about this band that formed out of the Human League. Everybody’s gonna move to prove the groove, no question, a great addition.

If we get the sun this year, the thought of chilling out to the symphonic disco beat of Clean Bandit is a real enticing one. It will be interesting to see if any guest artists turn up for the gig.

Now if we do get the sunshine, The Panjabi Hit Squad and their Desi Beats are just going to blow the Godiva crowd away.

Locally, you’ve got to love the Neville Staple band that will add the dynamic 2-Tone flavour to the whole mix, with tribute band Too Much Too Young as something of a taster.

Speaking of two tone, well Du Blonde and those crazy two tone teeth and their super edgy set is definitely something I’m looking forward to.

I expect more local talent to be added and announced soon, so more on that at another time and of course Godiva Calling too.

People will complain about the price, but for what you get I believe it’s a steal.
