FOOTBALL - Tony Pulis believes Coventry City 'have nothing to lose' in play-off semi-final second leg

TONY Pulis believes Coventry City have ‘nothing to lose’ ahead of their play-off semi-final second leg with Sunderland.

Pulis won two promotions as a manager – with Stoke City and Gillingham – in a career which saw him take charge of more than 1,000 games in the Premier League and Football League.

And the former Stoke boss believes there is no pressure on the Sky Blues to reach the play-off final at Wembley following their first leg defeat.

Speaking to OLBG, Pulis said: “I think Coventry City go into it really with nothing to lose.

“Nobody expects them to beat Sunderland so they’re free.

“They’ve got a free hit.  It’s a free hit. No pressure. There is pressure on Sunderland.

“I didn’t know Regis Le Bris up until he joined Sunderland and he’s really, really impressed me.

“I think he seems like a very level-headed person.”

Coventry enjoyed a meteoric rise up the Championship table following the appointment of Frank Lampard as head coach in November.

And Pulis heaped praise on Lampard for the work he has done since replacing Mark Robins in the Coventry Building Society Arena dugout.

Pulis added: “I spoke to Mark Robins when Mark had left the football club and Mark really believed that he had a squad capable of getting in the top six if not promoted.

“I think they started poorly, but they’d started poorly the year before as well and then came good over a period of time.

“So he was absolutely convinced they had enough quality there if they got a little bit of good fortune in the games and built up some momentum and some steam.

“That’s what Frank’s done. He’s gone in there. Maybe things that didn’t drop for Mark have dropped for Frank And he’s carried it on and he’s done an absolutely fantastic job.”

Coventry travel to Sunderland in the second leg of their play-off semi-final on Tuesday, May 13 with kick-off at 8pm at the Stadium of Light.
