Dying puppy left abandoned in shoebox on doorstep of Coventry home

A DYING puppy has been left abandoned in a shoebox on the doorstep of a home in Coventry.

The RSPCA is appealing for information after the young black cockapoo was discovered in Stanley Road on Sunday May 11.

RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer Paige Bacon is asking anyone with information on the dog, or where he came from, to get in touch.

She said: “This dog was found after a member of the public arrived home around 7pm after being out since 3.30pm. Upon arrival at the door they noticed a shoe box on the doorstep, and when they opened it they found a small black cockapoo type puppy inside.

“They rushed the dog to a vet where he was unresponsive, unable to lift his head and looked in a really poor condition. Despite the efforts of vets, the puppy sadly didn’t make it through the night.

“This must have been a shocking and distressing discovery, and we’re grateful to the person who found this dog and rushed him to a vet.

“When an animal is in need, the quicker they get help the better. If you find a small pet who has been abandoned, take them directly to a local vet or rescue centre. These teams can call in the expertise of our teams if there’s evidence that the animal has been neglected or abused.

“It’s really sad to think that he was dumped like this at a time when he desperately needed urgent help and care. It’s never the right thing to do to abandon an animal. There is plenty of help and advice out there for struggling pet owners, such as on the RSPCA’s website.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RSPCA’s appeals line on 0300 123 8018, quoting reference 01520992.
