COVENTRY City still have a 10 per cent sell-on clause as part of the deal that saw Viktor Gyokeres depart for Sporting Lisbon in a club-record sale.

Sources in Portugal have exclusively told the Observer, a 10 per cent sell-on clause is still active should Gyokeres depart Sporting this summer.

The news comes after talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook claimed Coventry waived their right to any potential transfer windfall from the sale of the striker.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Crook said: “I’ve not actually reported it yet, but I think you’ll find Coventry sold that sell-on clause at the start of last season to fund their own squad spend.”

However, sources in Portugal have told the Observer Sporting only bought five per cent of the 15 per cent sell-on clause the original deal contained.

Sporting paid Coventry an undisclosed fee to reduce the clause to 10 per cent at the start of the 2024/25 campaign.

Coventry will receive 10 per cent of any profit made on the initial fee Sporting paid for Gyokeres.

Gyokeres has scored a remarkable 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting since leaving the Sky Blues in a £17.5million (€20m) deal with a further £3.5m (€4m) in potential add-ons in July 2023.

And the striker has reportedly attracted interest from a number of top clubs this summer including Arsenal and Manchester United, according to Sky Sports.

The player believed a gentleman’s agreement was in place for him to leave Sporting for £59m (€79m) this summer – a fee significantly lower than his £84m (€100m) release clause.

However, Sporting club president Frederico Varandas has since revealed to Portuguese outlet Record no such agreement is in place.

Varandas insists Gyokeres can leave for less than his sizeable release clause but will demand an open negotiation for the striker from any bidding clubs.

However, Varandas also revealed the club has so far received no concrete offers for the striker.

Gyokeres has fired Sporting to consecutive league titles and also lifted the Portuguese Cup last season.
