So here we are, post yet another great Godiva Festival. We had the sunshine, the family fun and of course the great music. Here is how my Godiva shaped up.
Well, as per normal on a Friday, I got there nice and early while the place was empty. It’s great to see it like this, knowing that in a few minutes it will be full of excited music-lovers. Then I spotted an advert for the Coventry Music Museum on the big screen – wow!
So once the gates were open, in they poured. I have to say this for me was the best Friday night line-up – not necessary people I would go to see, but stood there right at the front, it made for a wonderful night.
First up was Godiva Calling winner MatthU – wow, a superb new talent from Nuneaton, dressed in a suit you can’t remember with a voice you can’t forget and an amazing guitar player backing him up.
I was already having a great time when the incredible Heather Small took the stage. What a voice! I forgot just how many hits she has had.
Then came my favourite of the night, Heaven 17 – more great voices and all those inventive songs from the 80’s like the irresistible (We don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang, Temptation and Come live With Me.
The night ended with the legendary Marc Almond with another fine set of tracks.
On Saturday at the main stage, I enjoyed another two Godiva Calling bands. The Royals are young but producing some great music. They were followed by metal band Chaplain, with lots of face make-up and heavy as they come, but the crowd took it all in and loved it, and so did I.
I only caught some of Du Blonde’s set. I was expecting bags of energy and acid vocals as seen on her videos, but she seemed very calm with both feet in the world of pop – still good though, as was my mate, rapper Whizzy.
Then it was the homecoming of the legend Neville Staple and his band. He has not been well of late, but despite this he was remarkably agile and gave a superb performance in the Godiva sunshine, with thousands of Ska crazed backing singers.
Then, over at the Cov Stage, we had Danny Ansell Band. He never lets us down, and tonight was no exception.
On to The Session – everyone knows by now how much I love this band.
Then it was time to close with more 2-Tone with Too Much Too Young. I was excited because I was aware that Lynval Golding from The Specials would make an appearance. Backstage, he told me he loved this band and their fine musicality. He came on and finished the night perfectly.
Sunday started late with the rain. I caught Rick Parfitt Jr and his band, who lit up the crowd with his superb cover versions and really brought the festival fun. I also oved the Phase One Steel band.
Finally, the mighty Ocean Colour Scene, who closed the festival with their mighty blue-eyed soul and a guest appearance from Lynval Golding.
Another great Godiva. See you in 2026.
