COVENTRY Blaze have appointed Canadian Coltyn Bates as assistant coach to Kevin Moore for the 2025/26 Elite League season.
The 27-year-old spent the last three seasons in coaching and management roles in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) with the Winkler Flyers.
Bates only began his off-ice career in 2022 as assistant general manager and assistant coach with the Flyers.
Moore said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Coltyn to our coaching staff.
“Coltyn’s swift progression in his coaching career speaks volumes about his work ethic, hockey IQ, and leadership.
“He’s had the benefit of learning from some exceptional coaches and brings a strong attention to detail, emotional intelligence, and a deep understanding of the game.
“We’re excited for what he’ll bring to our team this season.”
Bates became interim head coach and general manager at the Flyers in 2024 following the departure of Justin Falk who took on a scouting role with the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres.
The Flyers later promoted Bates to assistant general manager with an expanded role as associate coach.
He transitioned into coaching following a productive playing career.
Bates recorded 145 points (47 goals, 98 assists) in 169 games at junior level before earning a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin-Superior (NCAA Division III).
Over four seasons in the NCAA, he played 88 games, registering 47 points (20 goals, 27 assists), and helped his team win the NCAA III (WIAC) Championship in the 2020/21 season.
