Southampton's push to sign Coventry star Rudoni intensifies

Coventry Editorial 15th Aug, 2025   0

Southampton are in talks to sign Coventry City midfielder Jack Rudoni with the next few days being ‘crucial’, according to The Telegraph.

Since arriving from Huddersfield Town last summer, Rudoni has been instrumental to the Sky Blues’ success in the Championship.

Alas, that kind of run is bound to draw interest from elsewhere, with the Saints hoping to add him to their ranks prior to the end of the summer transfer window.

Southampton are coming off the back of one of the worst Premier League campaigns in the history of the competition, registering just 12 points, putting them only one above Derby County’s record low of 11. While they’ve started off the Championship season well with a win in the league as well as the cup, there are still going to be plenty of doubters.

As for City, this is the year in which Frank Lampard has the chance to really show what he can do with a full summer transfer window under his belt. After arriving in November 2024, he was able to help guide the club back to the play-offs when, at the time, it seemed quite unlikely.

They kicked things off with an uneventful 0-0 draw against Hull before going on to edge past Luton 1-0 in the League Cup during the week.

In terms of this potential deal, Football League World is reporting that Southampton will be required to pay a fee of £15 million in order to secure his services and as of this writing, it’s not clear as to whether or not they’ll be willing to put forward that kind of offer.

Rudoni chalked up nine goals and 12 assists across 43 league appearances last season and in the play-offs, he scored in the first leg of Coventry’s semi-final against Sunderland.

In a general sense, the money that’s being spent in the second tier of English football is at an all-time high right now. Between rich owners and the gap between the Premier League and the Championship getting wider, there are far more questions than answers about the future of transfers at this level.

Alas, this is about Jack Rudoni, a player who will likely have to decide where his best chances of promotion come from – the south coast or the Midlands.

The first chance we’ll get to see these two teams face off this season won’t come until December 20th, whereas the return fixture in Coventry is tentatively scheduled for March 14th. By that point, it’s anyone’s guess as to where Jack will be playing.

On the pitch, Coventry’s sole focus in the days ahead will be their trip to face Derby County on Saturday. Southampton face a tough test themselves in the form of a clash with Ipswich.

With Coventry priced at 6/5 to finish in the top six, you can use this free bet calculator to work out how highly bookmakers rate this squad. With that being said, it’ll be interesting to see if things shift if Rudoni makes the move to the south coast.
