BTCC - Coventry's Tom Ingram extends lead in BTCC standings after double podium at Knockhill

TOM Ingram extended his lead at the top of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) standings after securing a double podium at Knockhill.

Ingram followed up a third-place finish in race one with victory in race two and crossed the line fourth in race three.

The Coventry driver now leads the BTCC drivers’ standings by 17 points ahead of Ash Sutton.

Ingram said: “It was a fantastic weekend. As a team, we pulled a bit of a tactical masterstroke in race one.

“I don’t think we really expected to be able to get a podium on the medium tyre, so huge thanks to Senna [Proctor] – he really put the word mate in teammate.

“And then race two was absolutely perfect. What a car Team VERTU gave me yet again – it really is on another level this year.

“Race three was a case of managing risk versus reward, particularly in the battle with Ash [Sutton].

“We had a bit of a ding-dong, but at a certain point, I made the call to just focus on bringing it home.”

Ingram claimed a surprise podium finish in race one after Senna Proctor let his Team Vertu teammate through on the final lap of the race.

And Ingram then secured his fourth race win of the season in race two after he made light work of the two drivers ahead of him.

The Coventry racer cruised to victory more than seven seconds ahead of title rival Sutton who finished second.

And Ingram finished the weekend with a fourth-place finish in race three following a constant nose-to-tail battle with Sutton.

The BTCC season continues at Donington Park on the weekend of August 30 and 31.
