London Bride Uses Temu to Stage Stylish Engagement Party

In a social media age where weddings and engagements are often curated for Instagram and TikTok, one London bride chose to stage a celebration that looked polished and personal while avoiding the stress of inflated expectations.

Jodie Atkinson hosted an engagement party decorated with items sourced from Temu, including dried flowers, table runners, paper lanterns, sunglasses and a personalised disco ball featuring her and her partner’s names. “The ‘Adam and Jodie’ disco ball looked unreal on the table!” she said.

The celebration came together for just over £100. Comparable items would have cost about £780 from standard retailers, but Atkinson stressed that her focus was on the feel of the event, not the figure.

Using Temu, she said, allowed her to quickly pull together decorations that set the right tone without leaning on expensive suppliers or worrying about whether the party would match expectations online.

Unique Look

Among her favourite touches were the dried flowers and personalised stirrers, which she said gave the event a unique look. Other details — fans, sunglasses and mini disco balls — helped create a relaxed atmosphere. For Atkinson, the satisfaction came from seeing family and friends enjoy themselves.

The approach contrasts with the mounting pressure many young people say they feel when staging major life events. Nearly two-thirds report feeling compelled to present themselves a certain way online, while more than half say social media encourages them to buy things they don’t need. One in three admit to money-related anxiety linked to how they look or what they share.

Temu, which began onboarding UK and European sellers last year, says it is helping consumers save while broadening local options and improving delivery speed. A survey by Ipsos, commissioned by the platform, found more than 80% of UK users believe Temu offers value for money, with average savings of 25% in 2024.

Special Day

The pressure isn’t only financial. Ahead of her wedding, writer Shradha Shahani said “social media had warped the meaning of marriage for me in many ways,” adding that she had “forgotten that this was the beginning of something special with my partner.”

With the average UK wedding now costing £26,583 in 2025, couples like Atkinson are offering an alternative. By focusing on atmosphere and people rather than price tags or staged perfection, they are showing how milestones can be celebrated stylishly and without the weight of comparison.
