New Miss Coventry to represent city with 'pride and dedication'

AN ‘HONOURED’ law graduate and Good Citizen Award recipient has been crowned the new Miss Coventry – and says she will represent the city with ‘pride and dedication’.

Sharandeep Sahota, 21, was presented with the Miss Coventry crown and sash after nearly 25,000 people chose her in a national public vote.

Her popularity means she will bypass the Miss England semi-final and head straight to the Grand Final in Wolverhampton in November.

She said: “I am absolutely thrilled and honoured to be crowned Miss Coventry and to have the opportunity to represent our city in the Miss England Finals in November.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support from my community. Winning the public vote with nearly 25,000 votes is just incredible and a testament to the belief you all have in me.

“A special thank you to my sponsors, the British Organisation of People of Asian Origin, and to Dr Rakesh Sachdev and Davinder Prasad. They not only invited me to this amazing competition but have given me unwavering support in raising awareness for unpaid young carers through my project, ‘Caring for Carers.'”

Earlier this year, Sharandeep was presented with a Good Citizen Award by Coventry’s Lord Mayor – becoming one of the award’s youngest ever recipients.

A carer for her disabled relatives since the age of seven, Sharandeep has engaged in voluntary work supporting young carers and providing meals to the homeless. As a founder of the Young Carers’ Council at the Carers Trust, she successfully persuaded UCAS to recognise the role of young carers in its application process. In 2023 she was named the Duke of Edinburgh Awards’ Change Maker of the Year.

Sharandeep, who graduated from Coventry University with a 2:1 Law LLB Honours degree this year, added: “The Midlands Economic Summit solidified my ambition to pursue a career at the Bar, and I am looking forward to connecting with more barristers on mini-pupillages to gain hands-on experience before continuing my studies.

“Alongside my studies, I have been working with Solicitor Sabrina Sandhu from Maya and Co Solicitors to deal with immigration matters. It’s been incredibly rewarding, and I’m excited for a positive result for a client with a complex asylum appeal, whose claim is based on their political beliefs.”

She said her passion for advocacy and justice grows with every case and charity cause she joins, and is eager to use her experience to help realise her ambition of becoming a barrister.

She said: “From receiving my semi-finalist sash in June to now being crowned Miss Coventry, this journey has been a dream. I promise to represent our city, our culture, and our community with pride and dedication.”
