FOOTBALL - Bobby Thomas admits Coventry City can improve defensively ahead of M69 derby clash against Leicester City

BOBBY Thomas admits Coventry City need to tighten up at the back ahead of an M69 derby clash against Leicester City.

The Sky Blues have only recorded one clean sheet in the league this season which came on the opening day of the campaign against Hull City.

And while Coventry have enjoyed a free-scoring start to the season at the top end of the pitch, Thomas admits the Sky Blues can improve defensively.

Thomas said: “The amount of goals we’ve conceded this season have been pretty unfortunate for the pressure and shots we’ve faced.

“We’re conceding Championship goals – deflections going into the far corner – we’re not getting opened up but I’m sure it’ll start clicking.

“The shots on target we’ve faced this season must be very low but the goals conceded is not great.

“It’s something we can definitely improve on.”

Covnetry head into this weekend’s derby clash still unbeaten in the Championship.

And Thomas believes the Sky Blues have used the momentum gained at the back end of last season to make a strong start to the current campaign.

Thomas added: “We’ve taken off from last year where we were playing quite nice football towards the end of the season.

“We picked up where we left off. I’m not sure what’s different from the years before. It must just be the system we’re playing and how it suits the team.

“It’s going better than the past couple of years [at the start]. There’s just a couple of results we could have grabbed a couple more points.

“We’re all very confident going into the game. It’s a big occasion for the club. It’s a derby. Not much needs to be said.”

Coventry travel to Leicester on Saturday, September 20 with kick-off at 12.30pm at the King Power Stadium.
