Coventry City's Resilience Can Take Them Far This Season

Coventry Editorial 1st Oct, 2025   0

Unbeaten after the first six rounds of fixtures in the 2025/26 Championship campaign, Coventry City have shown themselves to be a tough nut to crack in this fledgling stage of the season.

While there is still a long way to go for Frank Lampard’s side, the Sky Blues have given indications they can be in the promotion picture come the business end of the campaign this term.

Lampard Forging a Resilient Coventry

Appointed back in November 2024, Lampard has had time to settle in at Coventry City and with a full pre-season under his belt, it’s time to see what he can bring to the West Midlands outfit. A previous manager at Chelsea, who are 25/1 in the Premiership betting to win the title this season, Lampard has coached at the highest level. Taking the step back down to the second tier, Lampard is 8/5 in the football betting tips to guide Coventry to promotion this season. The former England midfielder has come close to promotion from the Championship before, helping his previous employers Derby County reach the playoff final in 2019, only to lose out to Aston Villa. Lampard will have learned plenty from that experience, as well as from his two spells at Chelsea and a stint at Everton, and he will be looking to put all those learnings to good use at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Having had that full pre-season with his squad before this season, it’s been a positive start to the campaign for the Sky Blues. Undefeated after the first six games, Coventry are proving themselves to be serious contenders for a top-six finish this season. Lampard, who is approaching a year in the job, will know his side need to turn those draws into wins if they are to challenge for a top-two finish, but it’s certainly been a solid foundation to build on for the remainder of the campaign.

A Great Opportunity As Relegated Duo Struggle

The race for the automatic promotion places looks like it could be an open one this season, especially with two of last season’s sides relegated from the Premier League struggling to adapt to life back in the Championship. Both Southampton and Ipswich Town found the step up to the top flight too much to handle last term, and both the Saints and the Tractor Boys find themselves back in the Championship. With Ipswich winning one of their first five games and Southampton claiming one win in their first six outings, it’s been an underwhelming start from the pair.

The early-season struggles for Southampton and Ipswich should boost other clubs’ hopes of promotion, and Coventry can count themselves as a side who have a realistic shot at earning a place back in the top flight. With striker Haji Wright making an impressive start to the season with five goals in his first six appearances, the USA international could be key in helping Lampard achieve a first promotion in his managerial career.

With a team that’s tough to break down and a striker in Wright that can spearhead the attacking, there’s a lot to like about Lampard’s Sky Blues, and perhaps he can be the final piece to the puzzle to take the club back to the big time.
