FOOTBALL - Coventry City move top of Championship table after five-star display against Sheffield Wednesday

COVENTRY City moved top of the Championship table with a comprehensive 5-0 win against struggling Sheffield Wednesday.

A brace from Brandon Thomas-Asante put the Sky Blues in command before Haji Wright, Ellis Simms and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto all struck to seal another impressive win for Frank Lampard’s free-scoring side at Hillsborough.

And the result moves Coventry top of the Championship table, one points clear of Middlesbrough although Boro can reclaim top spot if they win at Portsmouth later this afternoon.

The Sky Blues made the perfect start as Thomas-Asante directed Bobby Thomas’s header into the top left corner from point-blank range after Matt Grimes delivered a corner into the box from the right.

A number of home supporters entered the field of play on the 10-minute mark which led to the referee pausing the game.

The Wednesday fans were protesting against the club’s owner Dejphon Chansiri, days after wages were not paid on time to players and staff for the fifth time in seven months.

The protest lasted around five minutes before stewards removed the supporters from the pitch and play resumed.

And Thomas-Asante double Coventry’s lead on 33 minutes when he fired a low shot back across goal into the bottom left corner after Ephron Mason-Clark won back possession high up the pitch.

The visitors all but sealed the points in first-half injury time as Wright touched home Thomas’s goalbound header from close range despite appearing to divert the ball into the net from an offside position.

Coventry struck again on 68 minutes when Kaine Kesler-Hayden drilled a ball across the box and fellow substitute Simms finished into an empty net from close range at the back post.

And Sakamoto completed the scoring on 75 minutes when he lashed a loose ball into the net from inside the penalty area after Wednesday failed to deal with a ball into the box from the right.

Coventry have now scored a staggering 27 goals in just nine league matches this season and remain unbeaten in the Championship.
