FOOTBALL - Frank Lampard insists Coventry City must 'keep feet on the ground' following Sheffield Wednesday victory

FRANK Lampard insists Coventry City must ‘keep their feet on the ground’ after moving top of the table with a dominant win at Sheffield Wednesday.

The Sky Blues cruised to a 5-0 win against struggling Wednesday at Hillsborough as Brandon Thomas-Asante netted a brace before Haji Wright, Ellis Simms and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto all found the net.

The result lifts Coventry to the top of the Championship table with the Sky Blues the only team yet to suffer defeat in the entirety of the Football League this season.

And while Lampard wants his players to enjoy their victory, he also stressed his side must remain grounded after picking up three wins without conceding in the space of a week.

Lampard said: “I can’t ask for much more. Three clean sheets and a lot of goals against tough opposition.

“The circumstances of the game were challenging. I wanted the players to be aware of that.

“It’s a tight turnaround physically but also the idea you can cruise into a game like this is really dangerous.

“I’m pleased with how the whole squad have handled the week. Hard work pays off.

“It’s important we keep our feet on the ground, enjoy the moment, and be ready to try and continue with this form.”

Coventry have now recorded four successive clean sheets in the league for the first time since November 2022.

And Lampard believes his side have created a good recipe after scoring 27 goals in just nine league matches, alongside shoring up at the back.

Lampard added: “We conceded a few goals in the early part of the season.

“I didn’t feel it was ever a structural thing, it was little details which is hard to control sometimes.

“We’ve tightened up even more, the whole team, clean sheets are massively important because they give that feeling of comfort.

“If you’re not conceding much and become clinical at the other end – that’s a nice recipe.

“It’s a good start – performance-wise it’s a really top start.”

Coventry are next in action against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, October 18 with kick-off at 3pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
