FRANK Lampard insists Coventry City must build in the January transfer window if the club want to achieve success this season.
The Sky Blues head into this weekend’s home clash with Watford top of the Championship table.
Coventry’s strong start to the campaign has put a number of the club’s star players in the spotlight.
However, Lampard is not worried about losing any of his key players when the transfer window reopens in January.
And the Sky Blues boss hopes he will be able to add to his squad to improve the stregth in depth in certain areas of the pitch.
Lampard said: “We’re very confident [of keeping our best players in January].
“If we want to sustain what we’re doing, we have to build on top of it, not take away from it.
“It was a strength of ours in the [summer] window that we managed to keep players who have improved a lot.
“If anything, in January we will look to build. If we want success [we’ll do that].
“There are some areas of the squad where we have strong backup and can handle the rigours of the season.
“And there are some areas where we may look to move forward on to become stronger.
“That’s a sign of a club that’s developing and wants to keep going with that strategy.”
Victory against Portsmouth in midweek stretched City’s unbeaten run at the start of the campaign to 11 matches.
And Lampard admits his team is playing with a newfound confidence compared to when he took charge of the club.
Lampard added: “It’s a balance of giving confidence to feel like a team who can consistently play like this from where we were, it’s a new feeling.
“It won’t be that we’re on this run all the time. This league is too competitive for that.
‘When I came in we were 17th, the confidence was low for various reasons.
“The club went through a really good period before that, coming up through the divisions.
“But we didn’t have that feeling [when I arrived] and we were searching to find the best way forward and the players were searching for confidence.
“At this point, we’ve found a lot of that and we should be proud of that. Our performance level has been pretty consistent and strong.
“But to go to the next level we have to take on challenges with form, fitness, opposition. Big teams learn that over the course of time. We’ll fight against that when needs be.”
Coventry host Watford on Saturday, October 25 with kick-off at 12.30pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
