FOOTBALL - Coventry City see unbeaten start to the season come to an end at Wrexham

KIEFFER Moore’s second-half hat-trick brought an end to Coventry City’s unbeaten start to the season as the Sky Blues lost 3-2 away at Wrexham.

Moore netted a perfect treble to condemn City to their first league defeat of the season after Ephron Mason-Clark put the visitors ahead at the Racecourse Ground.

A late goal from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto kept the Sky Blues in the contest with Frank Lampard’s side unable to carve out another clear-cut chance in the remaining minutes.

The defeat brings an end to Coventry’s 12-game unbeaten run at the start of the campaign while the Sky Blues also missed the chance to set a new club-record winning streak which remains at six matches.

Coventry went close early on as Liam Kitching headed Matt Grimes’ corner from the left wide of the post from six-yards out.

At the other end, former Sky Blues defender Dominic Hyam saw his hooked effort cleared to safety with Carl Rushworth off his line.

City responded with a chance of their own as Matt Grimes curled a free-kick inches past the post from 25-yards out.

Wrexham then spurned a glorious chance to break the deadlock as the ball broke kindly into the path of Lewis O’Brien in the box only for Rushworth to stick out a leg to deny the midfielder from 12-yards out.

However, Coventry took the lead on 22 minutes when Mason-Clark steered Sakamoto’s cross-field ball from the right into the bottom left corner on the volley.

The home side tested Rushworth again shortly before half time as he comfortably kept out O’Brien’s effort from distance.

And Wrexham went close early in the second half as Max Cleworth lashed a shot wide from just outside the penalty area with Rushworth scrambling across his goal.

The Welsh side drew level on the hour mark when Josh Windass fired a ball across the face of goal from the right and Moore slid in to turn the cross into the roof of the net from eight-yards out.

Moore struck again nine minutes later to complete the turnaround with a powerful header into the bottom left corner from Windass’s cross from the right.

And Wales international Moore completed his hat-trick on 83 minutes with a finish across Rushworth from Windass’s through ball.

The red-hot striker looked for a fourth goal moments later but could only shoot straight at Rushworth with power from distance.

However, Coventry grabbed a lifeline two minutes from time when Sakamoto curled a stunning effort into the right corner of the goal from 20-yards out.

The Sky Blues pushed for a late equaliser but failed to trouble the Wrexham goal again to suffer their first league defeat of the season.
