FRANK Lampard admits his Coventry City looked ‘ordinary’ in their defeat against Wrexham as the Sky Blues lost in the league for the first time this season.
A second-half hat-trick from Kieffer Moore brought an end to Coventry’ unbeaten start to the campaign at the Racecourse Ground.
That came after Ephron Mason-Clark put City ahead while Tatsuhiro Sakamoto netted late on in Wales as the Sky Blues slipped to a 3-2 defeat on the road.
Despite the defeat Coventry remain top of the Championship table, three points clear of closest challengers Middlesbrough.
And Lampard felt the Sky Blues dropped their standards against Wrexham as the club’s 12-game unbeaten run came to an end.
Lampard said: “We lost the game. That can be normal in football and we haven’t been normal this season. We’ve been extraordinary.
“We were a bit ordinary for us. Even in the first half I felt it. That happens in football if you drop five or 10 per cent, you can lose a game easily.
“We never got control [of the game] like we normally do, we needed to pass the ball better, there were times when we could have stayed on the ball in their half.
“It became the game they wanted and we allowed that. That’s part of the story of the game.
“It’s a sign that you can’t drop [your standards]. If anything you have to get better.”
Lampard changed three of his back four for the clash in Wales with Milan van Ewijk suspended, Bobby Thomas injured and Jay Dasilva ill.
However, the Sky Blues boss admits his side lacked fluidity all over the pitch and hopes Thomas could return to the side against Sheffield United in midweek.
Lampard added: “Bobby had a small issue with his calf. We’re hoping he’s back for Tuesday.
“Jay [Dasilva] was really sick after the Watford game for a few days, hence he didn’t start the game.
“That’s why we had three changes in the back four and we’ve been very consistent with the back four.
“When you make three changes it’s difficult. That’s not a criticism of the lads who came in, it just changes the feel of it a little bit.
“It wasn’t just that, even at the top end of the pitch we’re normally much more competitive and we were off it.”
Coventry host Sheffield United on Tuesday, November 4 with kick-off at 8pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
