COVENTRY City moved 10 points clear at the top of the Championship after scoring two late goals to claim a thrilling 4-2 win away at promotion rivals Middlesbrough.

The Sky Blues raced into a two-goal lead courtesy of efforts from Ellis Simms and Liam Kitching to stun the home side at the Riverside Stadium.

However, Morgan Whittaker reduced the deficit before half time while Bobby Thomas put through his own net early in the second period to bring the scores level.

Coventry reclaimed the lead five minutes from time when Kitching grabbed his second of the game before Simms struck moments later to seal the points.

The win moves the Sky Blues 10 points clear of Stoke City at the top of the table as Frank Lampard’s side sealed a fourth straight league victory.

Former Coventry assistant manager Adi Viveash took charge of Boro for the fixture – his third and final game at the helm as interim boss.

And the Sky Blues made a blistering start as Simms broke the deadlock after just 10 minutes with a stunning first time finish into the top-right corner from 15-yards out after Victor Torp drove with the ball from deep inside his own half.

City doubled their lead four minutes later when Matt Grimes volleyed a dropping ball into the box and Kitching headed home from eight-yards out.

However, Boro halved the deficit on 32 minutes as Whittaker sent a low volley into the bottom left corner from Alfie Jones’ flick-on.

And the home side equalised four minutes after the interval when Thomas miscued his attempted clearance at a corner and inadvertently volleyed the ball into his own net.

Boro spurned a golden chance to complete the turnaround when Tommy Conway blazed a shot over the bar from close range after sent a low cross into the striker’s path.

However, Coventry reclaimed the lead on 85 minutes as Kitching reacted quickest to turn home a loose ball in the box from seven-yards out after Sol Brynn kept out Thomas’s initial effort.

And the Sky Blues sealed the points less than a minute later when Simms nodded Jay Dasilva’s inch-perfect cross from the left into the net from five-yards out at the back post.
