FOOTBALL - Adi Viveash admits 'relentless' Coventry City proved too strong for Middlesbrough in defeat against former club

ADI Viveash admits ‘relentless’ Coventry City proved too strong for Middlesbrough as the former Sky Blues assistant lost his final game as interim Boro boss.

Both Liam Kitching and Ellis Simms struck twice for the Sky Blues as Coventry claimed a late victory to move 10 points clear at the top of the Championship table.

Boro had recovered from an early two-goal deficit courtesy of Morgan Whittaker’s volley and a freak own goal from Bobby Thomas.

And the home side spurned a glorious chance to complete the turnaround as Tommy Conway blazed over from close range.

Late goals from Kitching and Simms eventually sealed the points for Coventry which also marked Viveash’s final game in charge of Boro.

And Viveash admits Coventry showed why they are the current league leaders and envied the firepower of Frank Lampard’s side.

Viveash said: “It was a high-quality Championship game. You saw why they are where they are.

“We felt we played really well for long periods of the game. I felt if we kept a clean sheet in the second half we win the game.

“The place was rocking when we got it back to two-two. They were on the back foot and then there’s a key moment where we don’t take our opportunity.

“Possibly a two-two would have been a fair result but it wasn’t. That firepower Coventry have got, when they are in those moments they are just relentless.

“They just keep going and they did keep going and we just couldn’t quite hold out.”

Boro appointed Kim Hellberg as the club’s new manager earlier this week with Viveash to remain as part of the club’s coaching staff.

The former Sky Blues assistant manager took interim charge at Boro following the departure of Rob Edwards to the Premier League’s bottom side Wolverhampton Wanderers.
