FOOTBALL - Coventry United match best-ever FA Vase performance with third round win against Hanley Town

COVENTRY United matched their best-ever performance in the FA Vase after securing a 3-1 win against Hanley Town.

The Red and Greens recovered from an early setback to reach the fourth round of the competition for just the third time in their history.

Hanley led through Eden Bailey’s early goal only for Ryan Harkin and Charlie Shaw to strike and turn the game in Coventry’s favour at the break.

And Sam Ellis sealed United’s place in the next round with an injury-time goal at Butts Park Arena.

Coventry also reached the fourth round in 2018/19 and 2020/21.

United play at the same level as Hanley who ply their trade in the Midland Football League Premier Division.

And Hanley stunned the hosts after just six minutes as Bailey forced the ball home from close range following a long throw into the box from the right.

However, Coventry drew level on 17 minutes when Harkin scrambled a shot into the net from the ground in the box following a corner from the right.

And the home side completed the turnaround four minutes before half time as Shaw played a neat one-two with Riley Davoile and powered a shot past the Hanley goalkeeper from 15-yards out.

United eventually secured their place in the fourth round in injury time when substitute Ellis coolly found the bottom right corner from Harkin’s square pass.

Coventry are next in action against Northampton On Chenecks on Tuesday, December 9 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Old Northamptonians Sports Ground.
