FOOTBALL - Coventry Sphinx slip towards relegation zone after defeat against Bedworth United

COVENTRY Sphinx continue to slide towards the relegation zone following successive derby defeats over the festive period.

Sphinx began the year with a 2-1 defeat away at bottom club Bedworth United at The Oval on New Year’s Day.

That came after Coventry lost 3-2 at home against Rugby Borough at the Cameron Slater Arena on Boxing Day.

The results mean Sphinx sit 18th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, one point above the relegation zone.

Coventry broke the deadlock on 26 minutes when Kyle Carey curled a dipping effort into the bottom right corner from 20-yards out.

However, Bedworth equalised after the break on 70 minutes as substitute Ryan Boothe sent a bullet header into the top-right corner from six-yards out.

And the home side stunned Sphinx four minutes from time as Elliot Parrott rose highest to nod home a corner from the right late on.

Sphinx saw their midweek fixture against Lichfield City postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Coventry are next in action against Wellingborough Town on Saturday, January 10 with kick-off at 3pm at the Cameron Slater Arena.
