FOOTBALL - Coventry City pay tribute to former midfielder Terry Yorath

COVENTRY City have paid tribute to former player Terry Yorath who has died at the age of 75 following a short illness.

Yorath made a total of 99 appearances and scored three goals for the Sky Blues from 1976 to 1979.

He captained Coventry for most of his time at the club before departing for Tottenham Hotspur.

A club statement reads: “Everyone at Coventry City is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Sky Blues midfielder Terry Yorath at the age of 75.

“Our thoughts are with Terry’s family and friends at this sad time.

“Rest in peace, Terry.”




Yorath started his career at Leeds United where he made 199 appearances from 1967 to 1976.

His spell with Leeds saw him reach the European Cup final, FA Cup final and European Cup Winners’ Cup final.


Yorath was the first Welshman to play in a European Cup final.

He also won silverware with the Whites as Leeds won the First Division title in 1973/74 under legendary manager Don Revie.

Yorath represented his native Wales 59 times, including 42 as captain, and later managed his country from 1988 to 1993.

He took Wales to the brink of FIFA World Cup qualification for the 1994 tournament only to suffer defeat against Romania in the final qualifier.

Yorath also played for Vancouver Whitecaps, Bradford City and Swansea City.

He later managed Swansea and also took charge of Bradford, Cardiff City, Lebanon, Sheffield Wednesday and Margate.

Yorath is the father of presenter Gabby Logan.
