FOOTBALL - Coventry City under-21s stretch unbeaten run with victory at Cardiff City

COVENTRY City under-21s stretched their unbeaten run to six matches in all competitions with a 2-0 away win at Cardiff City.

A trialist put the young Sky Blues ahead early on before Aidan Dausch doubled Coventry’s lead shortly after half time at the Cardiff International Sports Campus.

The result means Coventry sit fourth in the Professional Development League North standings.

Coventry broke the deadlock after just three minutes when Elliot Betjemann scooped the ball into the box and a trialist rose highest to beat the Cardiff goalkeeper to the ball to open the scoring.

And the visitors went close again soon after as Charlie Finney headed George Shepherd’s cross against the top of the crossbar.

Cardiff responded with a couple of chances of their own as Sky Blues goalkeeper Oscar Varney produced a fine double save.

However, Coventry doubled their lead five minutes into the second period when Dausch found the net from Conrad Ambursley’s through ball.

A trialist then cleared a Cardiff shot off the line with Varney beaten before the latter denied Luke Pearce from point-blank range.

The Sky Blues almost added a third goal late on as Cardiff goalkeeper Ewan Griffiths helped Shepherd’s header behind.

Coventry under-21s are next in action against Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday, February 4 with kick-off at 1pm at the Alan Higgs Centre.
