Project praised for involving under-represented Coventry communities in sport

A WINNING project has been praised for helping to get under-represented Coventry communities involved in sport.

Coun Naeem Akhtar, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities at Coventry City Council, visited the volunteer-led Coventry Sports Cohesion Project as it held a session in Hillfields to encourage ethnic minority groups to get into sport.

The scheme is particularly targeted at people living in deprived areas such as Hillfields and Foleshill, which has a dense population of ethnic minorities.

The initiative developed further following the impact of the pandemic on the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities in 2021.

Since its launch in 2021, the organisation has seen great success in young people’s development and ability, with parents reporting greater satisfaction – and plans to continue to encourage more people to get involved.

Coun Akhtar said: “It was a pleasure to support some of the bright and talented young people in our city.

“We must recognise and highlight the importance of sports in our communities as a way to support young people’s development and wellbeing in our communities, bridging the gap for those who are disadvantaged, so that equal opportunities are made available for all young people.”
