Coventrians of all faiths unite under the Sky Blue flag

FLYING the flag for unity – Coventry City’s return to the Premier League is uniting people of all faiths under the Sky Blue flag.

The football club has donated five City flags to the Coventry Multi Faith Forum, which have been raised at a Sikh Gudwara, a Hindu temple, a mosque and Christian places of worship in the city.

Rev John Witcombe, the Dean of Coventry Cathedral, came up with the idea of using the club’s crest to capitalise on the unifying power of sport.

The Forum contacted the club, which agreed to provide five flags towards the initiative.

The city’s official ‘Lady Godiva’, Pru Porretta MBE – Chair of the Coventry Multi Faith Forum and Director of the Godiva Trust – said sport was a unifying experience for all ages, communities and faiths.

She said: “The idea is to fly the football flag as a flag of unity. We in Coventry value the enormous respect shown to all diverse cultures and faiths.

“Flags have been flying recently which have caused division within communities, whereas the football flag conjures up joy, hope, peace and unity for all faiths and all cultures.

“It’s a joy because Coventry have reached the Premier League after a long slog of 25 years.

“The message ‘we are Back’ comes at the end of a period when multiple faith groups across Coventry have been observing major festivals, including Easter, Pesach, Eid and Vaisakhi, prompting renewed focus on shared values and civic pride.”

Pru and fellow organisers hope the link between faith and sport will encourage positive engagement, particularly among young people, by presenting football as a pathway to teamwork, respect and belonging.

She added: “Supporters say football plays a key role in shared identity, recalling moments such as Coventry’s FA Cup win in 1987 as an example of how sport can unite a city at times of celebration.

“I remember how special that was. Everyone in Coventry will remember how it brought everyone together with pride.

“Look out for your place of worship flying the Coventry Sky Blues flag.”
