THE FIRST Sikh school in the city is promising to provide an outstanding education for pupils.
Seva School in Tiverton Road, Wyken, was opened last Wednesday by councillor David Kershaw, cabinet member for education in the city.
The free school aims to develop youngsters through the principles and teachings of the Sikh faith – outlined in the name Seva, which stands for service, excellence, virtues and aspiration.
In Sikhism the name also means to serve all of the wider community regardless of faith, selflessly without reward for the betterment of society.
Jaskarn Singh, who helped spearhead the project, thanked the community for their help and support.
He said: “It’s taken about two-and-a-half years to get this project off the ground but we’ve had lots of support from the local community and a host of local councillors.
“We felt that education in Coventry needed a boost and the community has been crying out for that for some time.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the support we’ve received especially the residents in Tiverton Road – we’ve been in good dialogue with them.”
The school will be holding two open days on September 30 and October 4 for pupils interested in joining.
