COVENTRY City Ladies remain level on points with Premier League Northern Division leaders Sheffield FC thanks to a 2-0 home win over Newcastle United at Sphinx Drive.
Two first half goals from Amber Hughes earned Craig Nicholls’ side their ninth successive win in all competitions.
The first goal came after just two minutes when Hughes showed great pace and skill to skip past two defenders before unleashing a long range effort which sailed into the roof of the net.
Hughes bagged her brace four minutes before the break and had Destiney Toussaint to thank for picking her out with an inch-perfect cross with Hughes was able to acrobatically volley home from the edge of the area.
“It was a tough game in tough conditions but I think we battled well as a team from start to finish.” said Hughes.
“I am delighted to get on the scoresheet again and I think we can take a lot of positives from the game.
“We are looking really sharp and quality as a team in training and games so i’m really looking forward to the rest of the season.”
Manger Nicholls added: “Overall I’m really pleased with the result and a clean sheet which always boosts confidence.
“We played some good football throughout but I think we were perhaps pulled down in some aspects due to their level, with a difficult surface also hindering our passing ethos.
“Three points is the main thing though and two great goals secured them, we are past the 30 point mark now which is good to see at this stage.”
City ladies are next in action when they host Bradford on December 21.
