Council chiefs vow to support Albany Theatre

COUNCIL bosses have promised to provide help and support to one of the city’s most historic theatres after fears it could face an uncertain future.

The Albany Theatre, or the Butts Theatre as it is more commonly known, could be forced to close its doors over the future of its lease.

Volunteers running the successful community theatre, which opened its doors in 1935, are trying to get clarity on the future of its lease with MCD, developers of the site around the theatre, which has gone into administration.

And although at this moment in time there is no indication it could be forced to close, the council has confirmed it will provide practical support and advice to the theatre and help secure its leasehold.

“This is a fantastic example of the community getting together and making a real success of breathing new life into the theatre.” said Coun Abdul Khan, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sports.

“We were very pleased to support the trust created to bring the Albany Theatre back to operational standard, and it’s now a real jewel in our cultural crown.

“The board doesn’t need money from us, but if it does need legal advice or expertise to help sort out the issues they’re facing as a result of MCD going into administration we’d be very pleased to provide it.”

The theatre was forced to close back in 2009 when City College acquired the land and transformed the area into a new student hub.

But back in February last year it re-opened thanks to the help of the council and volunteers who revamped the theatre which has 13 shows lined up before Christmas.

Coun Kahn added: “We want to see the Albany Theatre go from strength to strength in Coventry, so we’ll do what we can our end to make sure that happens, and I’m getting in touch with Chair of the Trust, David Meredith, to make sure he knows we’re here to help if we can.”
