A COUPLE cheated death and escaped without significant injury on New Year’s Eve when their car collided with a shop front in Coventry.

The crash occured on the junction of Humber Road and Bolingbrooke Road shortly after 1.50pm and saw both the driver and the passenger – a man and woman both thought to be in their 60s – avoid any significant injuries.

Crews from West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) arrived to find the car that a number of pedestrians also had a lucky escape – narrowly missing the vehicle as it left the road and collided with the shop, to which it caused considerable damage.

An ambulance, a community paramedic in a rapid response vehicle and a paramedic area support officer were sent to the scene by WMAS, and a doctor also attended in a rapid response car from the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance base.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service A spokesman from WMAS said: “Two people were assisted from the car with the help of ambulance staff and the fire service but they did not have to be cut free from the vehicle.

“The male driver was assessed at scene and taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire as a precaution, while the female passenger was assessed and discharged at scene.

“It is extremely fortunate that neither of the two patients suffered significant injuries in the incident.

The shop owner also explained her relief that it had not happened on any other day of the year, as the shop would usually have been full at that time of day and could have resulted in a much more serious set of circumstances.”
